People who want to start catering or other food-related businesses will be
able to rent a commercial-grade kitchen if a proposed business incubator
gets off the ground in Norco.
St. Charles Parish government is putting up $275,000 to buy a building to
house the kitchen. The project is a joint venture between the parish,
Greater New Orleans Inc., Goodwill Industries, the Louisiana State
University Business and Technology Center, and the River Parishes Community
Development Corp.
Corey Faucheux, director of the parish's Economic Development Department,
said the incubator is designed to provide support for small food-related
businesses, as well as those whose commercial kitchens were damaged in
Hurricane Katrina.
"Instead of having to go out and build a commercial kitchen, or prepare food
(for sale) in a home kitchen, they will be able to rent a commercial-grade,
FDA-approved kitchen for a few hours," Faucheux said. "Not only that, but
Goodwill will have workers available to package the product, and they'll get
counseling about growing their business from LSU."
